about the sanctuary
Magical Creatures is a nonprofit farm animal rescue and sanctuary located on Hawaii's Big Island. We were founded in 2018 and are now home to over 95 animals who were saved from slaughter, rescued from neglect, have special needs, or were orphaned or injured in the wild. Our vision is a world where every animal is valued, every life is respected, and compassion guides how we live, work, and care for our planet.
what we do
Our mission is to rescue and provide lifelong refuge for farmed animals on Hawaiʻi Island, while creating a global classroom for compassion — fostering meaningful connections between people and animals to inspire conscious choices and kinder ways of living.
Magical Creatures Sanctuary gives people the chance to connect with rescued farm animals in real, hands-on ways. We offer tours, live-in internships, volunteer opportunities, and community events where you can spend time at the sanctuary and learn what it takes to care for the animals. The goal is simple: help people build real connections with animals so they leave caring more and wanting to make kinder choices.

who we are
Magical Creatures is an entirely volunteer-run organization and we are privileged to have an extraordinarily dedicated team. The sanctuary was founded by our Executive Director, Helena Lundblad, in 2018. When she and her husband Mathias moved to Hawaii in 2016, they had no intention of creating an animal sanctuary. But an unexpected opportunity arose for Helena to bring together her many passions and focus her energy on the welfare of farmed animals. The sanctuary has grown with a wonderfully collaborative and dedicated group of volunteers who always put our residents first.
