The Love Stories
JANICE & TOM
Janice was the very first goat here at the sanctuary. She arrived as a baby unable to walk. After much love, therapy and a set of prosthetics, Janice, now a bit older, was ready to leave Helena's house and become an outside goat. Helena knew she would need a companion to begin the new chapter of her life. Enter Tom. Tom was rescued after losing much of his eyesight and not being able to fend for himself in the wild. When he arrived, he was terrified of humans and didn't want to leave his stall. However, when Janice was brought to him, she approached him and gently put her face near his. He lifted his head, looking up at her with his good eye, and that was that. They became tightly bonded and spend most of their time closely together, including at night when they share that same stall. Although he's still a bit shy around people, he always stands protectively by Janice whenever people go near her. Janice is a warrior princess and can take care of herself. However, she always tells Tom how much she appreciates his loyal bravery.
CYRIL & CHIKAChika was rescued from a meat farm. She was loved by her rescuer, but when she had to move out of her house, she no longer had a safe space for Chika. She also wanted her to have sheep friends because solitary sheep get very lonely. Cyril was rescued from another meat farm by neighbors who noticed he wasn't thriving. It turned out Cyril was born with a congenital heart condition (an enlarged heart) and required multiple daily medications. His rescuers were happy to cover his medical expenses, but wanted him to find a home where not only his medical needs could be met, but also his social needs. Unfortunately, we soon realized his heart condition would keep him from safely joining the big herd. Fortunately however, Chika decided to stay by his side in the special needs pasture. This bonded pair is inseparable and can frequently be found napping together intertwined.
OZ & ANNABELLEOz was a stud at a goat farm. When the family quit the goat business they kept him in case they wanted to breed in the future. Though well-cared for, as a herd animal, he was lonely. Enter Annabelle. Annabelle was a stray goat wandering the neighborhood when she noticed Oz, standing alone at his gate. It was mutual love at first sight and she would visit him regularly. Unfortunately, one day while visiting, she was attacked by dogs. She lost an ear and almost her life, but Oz's family rescued her. Unable to provide the care that she needed, they surrendered her to us. Fortunately, recognizing their very clear bond, they allowed Oz to accompany her to her new life with us. Although being with ladies had been Oz's entire life, he remains completely loyal to her. He ignores all the other females, and it's very rare to ever find them out of one another's sight.
DAISY & BRUCE
Daisy and Bruce were one of our lava flow evacuees from the Kilauea eruption in 2018. Bruce is the biggest goat at the sanctuary, making many people mistake him for King. He, however, has no interest in being king. He's happy to leave that to Babette, and focus his attention elsewhere. Although he loves food, A LOT, as evidenced by his belly, he loves Daisy even more. Daisy is super sweet and friendly with everyone. She's a pretty girl and could flirt with any of the other (younger, faster) gentlemen in the herd; her heart belongs only to Bruce. Although Bruce is big and strong, for a long time he felt undeserving of Daisy's affection because he was dehorned before coming to the sanctuary. Among horns' many important uses, one is to look attractive to potential love interests. Although there are many males in the herd, some with very impressive horns, Daisy has been steadfast, telling Bruce that he's perfect. He, in turn, writes her love poetry and is almost always by her side.
PEPE & STORMY
Stormy and Pepe are two senior goats that retired from the big goat herd, to join the sheep. While they were with the goats, we noticed that they'd often be off by themselves. Initially, we worried they were being bullied or were sick. We soon realized it was related to a generation gap, and that these ladies just wanted a more laid-back lifestyle. Now, they're with the sheep, but still prefer to keep to themselves. They are deeply bonded, but sometimes the bond is a little unbalanced. Pepe cares deeply for Stprmy, but sometimes wants some alone time. When she slips away and Pepe realizes she's gone, she panics. She runs around the pasture, frantically screaming for Pepe. When she eventually finds her, she says something to the effect of, "I lost you! I thought I'd never see you again! I missed you so much! I love you. I love you! Did you miss me?!?" Pepe typically responds with, "Oh... hey."
PEEP & KIWI
Kiwi was found as a young adult, by the side of the road unable to walk. Once here, he ate and drank eagerly. He soon started to move around, so we assume he was suffering from weakness due to starvation and/or dehydration. A part of each wing has a disfigured feather, called Angel Wings. They're a result of poor nutrition as a duckling, and this means he will never fly. Peep was found alone the day she hatched. She possibly hadn't yet hatched when her family was scared away. She grew up here, transforming from a little yellow fuzzball into a beautiful white girl. Although, Kiwi had no interest in befriending her when she was little, once she got a bit older that all changed. Today, he's madly in love with her, following her wherever she goes. Although she can fly away and likes to stand on the roof, she prefers to stay on the ground next to her loving boyfriend.
MILO & NEWTON
Milo was rejected by his mom on a farm south of Hilo and was surrendered to our good friend and animal rescuer, Nonny. Newton was rescued from a severe neglect case. Of the 90 sheep in his flock, 30 died due to starvation and dehydration. Newton was found dying under a tree, alone, which means his mother did not survive. Both orphans spent time with Menina, our handicapped sheep, before joining the big herd. When Newton, still a lamb, joined the herd, Menina told Milo to look out for him, which he did. They love to snack together from Menina's hay bag where they tell her about the latest gossip. They're also very affectionate with each other when getting cuddles from visitors. While they get their back scratched, Milo will frequently kiss Newton's ears, as they both happily wag their tails.
